The Hidden Danger: Microplastics in horse blankets and its impact on equine health and the environment

In equestrian sports, horse rugs made of synthetic materials such as polyester and fleece are very popular due to their durability and insulating properties. However, behind their obvious benefits lies a silent threat: microplastics. In this blog post, we look at the problem of microplastic pollution, the potential impact it can have on horses, and the steps we can take to reduce this environmental and health hazard.

Understanding microplastics in horse blankets:

Horse rugs made from synthetic materials, including polyester, fleece and other plastic-based fabrics, shed microplastic fibers during use and particularly when washed. Microplastics are released into wastewater and eventually into the environment, where they pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems and beyond.

The effects on horses:

  • Inhalation and skin contact: Horses can be exposed to microplastics when they breathe air contaminated with these tiny particles. In addition, direct contact with blankets containing microplastics can lead to the absorption of these particles through the skin.
  • Digestive system: Horses can inadvertently ingest microplastics while grazing or consuming contaminated feed, hay or water. The presence of microplastics in their digestive system can potentially lead to adverse health effects.

Environmental impact: Microplastics derived from horse blankets can have harmful environmental impacts:

  • Water pollution: Microplastics excreted from washing can enter water bodies, where they pose a threat to aquatic life. Fish, invertebrates and other organisms can mistake microplastics for food, leading to bioaccumulation and potential disruption to ecosystems
  • Soil contamination: When microplastics are washed off ceilings, they can penetrate the soil and affect its composition. This can have an impact on agricultural practices, potentially affecting plants and the entire food chain.

Reducing the impact of microplastics:

While the complete elimination of microplastics from horse blankets may be challenging, we can take steps to minimize the release of microplastics and mitigate their impact:

  1. Conscious Blanket Use: Whenever possible, limit the use of synthetic blankets and opt for natural fiber alternatives such as cotton or wool.
  2. Washing Techniques: Reduce the frequency of washing fleece blankets to minimize the release of microplastics. If washing is necessary, use techniques to capture microplastics, e.g. B. special laundry bags or filters.
  3. Consider choosing sustainable blankets: Inquire about eco-friendly blankets that are made from natural fibers and have minimal impact on the environment.
