The saddle flaps of Icelandic horse saddles are longer than those of dressage and eventing saddles for English riding and wider than those of small horse saddles. Therefore, saddlecloths are often too short or too narrow for Icelandic horse saddles. It is important to choose saddle pads that are specifically tailored for Icelandic horse saddles.

Either saddle covers, which reproduce the entire contact surface of the saddle, or saddle pads, which only lie under the saddle cushions, can be used. These cuts provide riders with fine thigh aids and a good fit for the Icelandic horse saddles. Both versions are available from L'Evoine with and without additional alpaca fleece for shock absorption.

The decision whether to choose a saddle pad or a saddle blanket depends on various factors. Saddle covers have the task of protecting the saddle from dirt and sweat. They are adapted to the shape and size of the saddle and should be larger than the saddle to avoid wrinkles and pressure points.

Saddle pads are often also called saddle cushions and usually fulfill a compensating function for muscular deficits (L'Evoine correction pad) or serve to compensate for shocks.
